We all have things to atone for. We wouldn't be human if we didn't.

The trick I think is to forgive yourself and let go once you have learned what you did wrong and resolve not to repeat it. So many of us live in the shadow of regret and are afraid to move on lest we appear selfish. Guilt will only eat away at us until we let go of the need to languish in masochistic thought.

I have less energy now for self-flagelation and would prefer just to reflect with less emotional investment on my human failings.
