The neighborhood where I live was begun around the turn of the 20th century and hence combines retail and urban space in a harmonious way that more closely resembles European models. Most of North America however uses an all or nothing approach where a zone that is for single family houses will contain nothing but which means you are getting into your car to buy a carton of milk.

This interesting video shows us how we should be able to get the best of both worlds and hopefully future urban planning will follow suit...
